GT Alpina

GT Alpina by Reto Moser proudly calls itself a workhorse serif, but delights in playing with the very meaning of that concept. It reaches into the grab bag of typographic history to resurrect shapes some may mistakenly see as too expressive. Over the course of eight years Reto meticulously worked on melding these distinct shapes with a pragmatic execution. The result is a comprehensive family of seventy fonts covering a wide range of width, weight, contrast, and proportionality.

This typeface showcase exclusively uses the new variable fonts format for all of its features and animations.

🔴
The Design’s Story ⌛

GT Alpina started its life in 2011 as a one-off typeface, designed for a book celebrating the 75 year anniversary of the Swiss Foundation for Alpine Research. The typeface’s roots lie in classic book typography, which requires a steady rhythm and measured proportions. In the eight years since this first use, the typeface family has both evolved in its design and expanded in its breadth.

🕛 Lean Into It

The visual language sharpened over time for both the roman and italic styles. The italics’ perky details and sharp angle plays well with the comparatively more reserved roman.
Thin Bold

🔴
Pumping & Posing☱

The design of the roman styles is first and foremost concerned with the reading experience. To that aim, the characters’ widths are carefully balanced. Unique and unexpected design details add personality to that solid rhythm and allow the typeface to express its outspoken personality.
Condensed Extended

🔵
☲Flexing & Stretching

The Standard width subfamily is the main summit of GT Alpina, flanked by the Condensed and Extended widths. The three subfamilies are both functional and conceptual siblings to grow the typeface’s territory.
Normal Fine

Business and Pleasure ☰

The three widths are accompanied by a higher-contrast version each, the Fine subfamilies, which play with the contrast between the thick and thin parts of each letter. The result of this exploration emphasizes the typeface’s personality and lends an elegant air to its design.

Zany 🕹 Details

While built to be a workhorse serif, the typeface isn’t trading personality for efficiency. The key for any typeface to shine lies in all the little details making up its personality. To illustrate these details, we’ve created a very bland example serif shown above and below, deprived from all of GT Alpina’s characteristic elements. The slight shift of the contrast axis—the angled axis of thick and thin parts in letters like the o—adds vitality to the text flow. Characters such as Q and Z invert the contrast for an even more dramatic effect.

Have Some 🖤 Balls

GT Alpina’s distinct ball terminals create visual accents sprinkled across the typeface. If it lacked them, the texture of the typeface would even out even more—but also lead to a stale look. As the ball terminals’ size remains the same throughout all the weights, this feature becomes particularly prominent in the Light weight. Some historical references like the carved ink traps in the S add sharpness. Others, such as the overhanging terminals on a and f, help connecting neighbouring letters to each other and create more compact word shapes.
Fine Fine Italic

🥔
☳ Renounce Boring

Likewise, the italic is a study in how a body copy typeface can find character in historical examples while eschewing the strictness of any single such model. Its variable angle and the soft pathing, as well as the characteristic ball terminals, give the italic an analog, calligraphic touch.
Condensed Extended

🔵
Variety ╠═══════╣ the Spice of Life

All italic weights are also available in the three widths. As such, both different widths as well as different weights can be used for differentiation or when pairing the roman and italic styles.
Proportional Typewriter

🥔
EASY COME ⌨ Easy Go

For the monospaced part of the family, Reto was inspired by the letters sent across the globe by explorers of the late 18th and early 19th century. As the Typewriter name implies, its roots lie in the limitations of this mechanical writing instrument, and not the computer coding environments nowadays most often associated with this kind of typeface.
Thin Bold

🔴
Time & Again 🎈

GT Alpina Typewriter is based on the idea of regular letter shapes being pressed into the rigorous corsett of a monospaced character width. Because mechanical typewriters imprint letters forcefully onto a paper surface, the subfamily’s corners are slightly rounded and serifs change their shape.
Thin Bold

🔴
Nothing is Permanent ☴ Except Change

Like the roman Typewriter styles, the italics investigate how a proportional typeface’s letters can stretch into the regularized rhythm of a monospace. Reto’s inventive solution includes letters like the rollercoaster i and the r without a base serif.
Thin Bold

We are family ☵

This family of 70 styles across 7 subfamilies, while supporting over 50 languages, also sports a wide range of non-alphabetic characters: emojis, arrows, box-building elements, and much more.
